DIY projects save time and money and allow you to create something that is exactly what you want for your home. But it's important to make sure you're building your project safely. When building a deck railing for your home, there are several different things to keep in mind. Here are some helpful tips to get you started on your new deck railing.

Always Check Local Codes

Codes for deck railings can vary from town to town, but it's important to know the codes for certain aspects of the railing before starting your project. Be sure to find out the codes for:

  • Railing height- usually 36 inches or higher
  • Space between balusters- usually four inches or less
  • The distance between posts- usually six feet or less

Materials Needed

No matter the design or style of your deck railing, there are generally certain materials that will be needed. Such as:

  • Rail caps
  • Top and bottom rails
  • Balusters

Once you've researched your local building codes and gathered all your materials, you're ready to begin building your deck railing. Keep these things in mind during your project.

  • Be sure to cut both the top and bottom deck rails so they fit tightly between the posts.
  • Make sure the balusters are cut to length and the end cut square is at the top and at a 45-degree angle at the bottom.
  • The locations of balusters should be marked on the top and bottom rails.
  • To attach the balusters to face the bottom of the rail, deck screws should be used. The angle of the baluster should be flush with the rail at the bottom.
  • The top of the balusters should be attached through the top rail.
  • Don't forget to use rail caps on the post tops and the top rails.
  • Add an attached block between the surface of the deck and the bottom rail in the centre each span for support?

This may seem like a lot of information, but it's important to build a deck railing that's safe for your family and friends. Using these tips and the right materials you'll have a new deck railing installed in no time. Come for all your deck railing needs and don't be afraid to ask any questions.
